Important Travel Reminders!

1. Check your passport expiration date

2. Secure your electronic travel visa to the UK

The electronic travel visa is a new requirement for US citizens effective January 1, 2025. It's done via an app and takes about 10 minutes to apply, and comes through usually within the hour or day. While you might be fine to leave this for the last minute, it's best to have this settled in advance. The app is listed as "UK ETA" in your App Store. Once complete, it's valid for two years.

Tip: When you get to the "scan passport chip" prompt, if their instructions don't work for you, try scanning the very last page of your passport at the bottom. Worked better for us!

Additional Information

How do I get to Edinburgh?

By Air: The easiest way to get to Edinburgh is by flying into Edinburgh Airport (EDI), located about 8 miles (13 km) west of the city center. Many international airlines fly directly into Edinburgh, or you can connect through other major airports in the UK like London Heathrow or Gatwick.

By Train: Edinburgh is well-connected by train from other major UK cities. Edinburgh Waverley Station is in the heart of the city, and direct trains from London take about 4.5 to 5 hours.

By Car: If you’re driving, Edinburgh is easily accessible from other cities in the UK. The M8 motorway connects Edinburgh to Glasgow, and the A1 connects to the south of England.

**Pro tip: From the US, look for a cheaper flight into a major city like London, Paris, Lisbon, Dublin, etc. and get a cheap hopper flight from there for <$50. Book these separately and you’ll save a lot! The ‘explore’ map function in Google Flights can give you these options at a glance. How do I get around Edinburgh & Carberry?

Public Transportation: Edinburgh has an excellent public transport system, including buses and trams. The Edinburgh Trams run from the airport to the city center, and the Lothian Buses cover most of the city. Tickets can be purchased on board or via an app.

Walking: Edinburgh is a very walkable city, especially the Old and New Towns. If you’re staying in the city center, you can easily explore the major attractions by foot.

Taxis & Ride-Sharing: Taxis are plentiful in Edinburgh, or you can use ride-sharing apps like Uber.

Car Rentals: While you may not need a car within the city, you might consider renting one if you plan to explore further out. However, parking can be limited in the city center, and many guests will likely prefer public transport.
